Energy Island Forum Unveils First Roadmap, Paving the Way for Europe’s Green Transition!

More than 60 participants from 12 countries gathered at the European Parliament to celebrate the launch of the Energy Island Forum’s inaugural roadmap, titled “MAKING ENERGY ISLANDS A SUCCESS”. This event marks a pivotal moment in the development of Europe’s first energy islands, setting the stage for significant advancements by 2030 and laying the foundation for continued innovation through 2050.

The roadmap was unveiled by Professor Nicolaos A. Cutululis, Chairman of the Energy Island Forum, and co-hosted by MEPs Niels Fuglsang (Denmark) and Borys Budka (Poland), Chair of the ITRE Committee. Both MEPs are ardent supporters of this initiative, which aims to accelerate Europe’s transition to green energy.

The event highlighted the collaborative spirit and determination necessary to make energy islands a cornerstone of Europe’s green transition.

Key figures who discussed and commented on the roadmap included, Joachim Balke, Head of Unit for Infrastructure and Regional Cooperation, DG Energy, European Commission, James Matthys-Donnadieu, Chief Officer Customers, Markets and System, Elia, Dirk Van Hertem, Professor, KU Leuven, Ulrik Stridbæk, Vice President, Head of Regulatory Affairs, Ørsted and Hessel de Jong, COO, Copenhagen Energy Islands (CIP).

Key Takeaways
Niels Fuglsang emphasized the central role of energy islands in the EU’s priorities, noting their contribution to combating climate change, enhancing energy security, and boosting European competitiveness.

The panel underscored the importance of completing the first energy islands by 2030 or shortly thereafter. These initial projects will pave the way for future innovations. Addressing financial risks and securing funding for necessary grid infrastructure are critical steps in this process.

Despite the technological challenges and significant investments required, the greater risk lies in inaction. Failing to address climate change and allowing non-European countries to lead in technological advancements could leave Europe dependent on their progress.

A heartfelt thanks was extended to all contributors to this first roadmap, including DTU Wind and Energy Systems, Ørsted, Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, Vestas, Siemens Energy, Siemens Gamesa, Hitachi Energy, Green Power Denmark, Energinet, Bornholm’s Energy & Supply, Port of Roenne A/S, Regional Municipality of Bornholm, Offshore Center Bornholm, DI Energi, and others.

The list remains open for additional contributors to join this groundbreaking initiative.
