Connecting Nations, Connecting Grids

As Europe accelerates its green transition, the role of transmission system operators (TSOs) has never been more critical. In this session, Stefan Kapferer, CEO of Germany’s 50Hertz, and Thomas Egebo, CEO of Denmark’s Energinet, outline how to build a resilient and truly interconnected power system that supports offshore expansion, strengthens security of supply, and drives European cooperation.

They are then joined by Tim Oliver Holt, Executive Board Member, Siemens Energy, and Claes Westerlind, CEO of NKT, for a focused Q&A on the industrial scale-up required to deliver Europe’s offshore ambitions. Together, the four leaders explore how technology, manufacturing capacity and system planning must align to connect nations – and connect grids – across Europe.

This evening session, moderated by acclaimed journalist Matilde Kimer, brings together leading voices in cybersecurity and geopolitics to explore how the Baltic Sea region can defend its critical energy infrastructure against cyberattacks, hybrid threats, and geopolitical disruption. What does resilience look like in an era of digital warfare and strategic sabotage?

How can nations build resilience against cyberattacks, hybrid warfare, and strategic sabotage in an age where energy and security are one and the same?

Panelists:

Heli Tiirmaa-Klaar (EST)Cyber diplomat and Distinguished Fellow at the German Marshall Fund. She has led cyber diplomacy efforts at NATO and the EU, and currently chairs the multinational IT Coalition supporting Ukraine’s cyber defense

Morten Bæk (DK) – Partner at Implement Consulting Group, where he leads the Defence and Security industry team. Former senior civil servant and expert in geopolitics and security policy, advising clients on how to contribute to Europe’s collective deterrence and build resilience in an era of hybrid threats and strategic competition.

Aligning Europe’s offshore agenda

The Energy Island Summit 2025 closes with a keynote that links the Baltic Sea to the North Sea.

Johanna Meier, senior representative from Deutsche Energie-Agentur (DENA) outlines some of the critical decisions Europe must make in the months ahead: coordinating offshore wind tenders and grid development at a truly European scale and creating solid models for cost and risk sharing.

In dialogue with Thomas Egebo, CEO of Energinet, she discusses how learnings from Bornholm Energy Island can connect to the emerging hybrid clusters and multi-market grids in the North Sea.

Together they show how regional projects can evolve into a single European offshore backbone.
