Baltic Energy Island
Summit 2023

Welcome to one of the World’s First Energy Islands – Bornholm.

We’re proud to be leading the way towards a sustainable energy future powered by offshore wind with a vision to become the green hub of the Baltic Sea.

The transformation of the energy system into an integrated, intelligent, and robust system provides endless opportunities for businesses, cities, countries, entrepreneurs, and citizens alike. We need to seize those opportunities with respect for society.

Join us at the very first Baltic Energy Island Summit, where we will discuss the future of sustainable energy systems, the societies they power and transform, and the opportunities they provide.

Don’t miss this unique opportunity to learn, network, and contribute to a greener future. This event is designed for professionals in the energy industry, politicians, researchers, journalists, and anyone working in the field of energy transition.

The conference will cover four main themes:

Green regional growth

The green transition affects both energy systems and society. How can Bornholm's transformation be supported while preserving its unique qualities, by learning from other cities and regions undergoing similar transformations?

Technologies and scaling

Bornholm Island provides a unique environment for inventing and developing new technologies and services. Which technologies and systems should Bornholm develop, and how can they be scaled from Bornholm's specific environment to global solutions?

Skills and resources

The green transition requires re-skilling, education, and resource management. How can the workforce and resources needed for a green energy system be developed, and very importantly how do we attract a competent workforce from outside, make them feel welcome and encourage them to become a part of the local society on a permanent basis?

Regulatory innovation for green transition

How can regulatory innovation support the deployment of green technologies, services, and systems while balancing citizens' concerns, environmental protection, and democratic processes?

A detailed program will be available in early March. Due to limited space, register now to secure your seat.

A transition of unprecedented scale and speed – opportunities and challenges (Plenary panel debate)

In the Summit’s opening debate, we will expand on how to balance managing challenges and capture the vast opportunities the energy island concept offers. The panel will help answer some of the most burning questions – and potentially add a few of their own: Following up on the ambitions in the Marienborg Declaration, which opportunities/challenges are most important? How can Bornholm, as the World’s first energy island, become a true force field for green energy and a spearhead for the Baltic Sea region? How do we ensure a real green transition in a manner that embraces the local society and creates green regional growth? Where in the world do we look for inspiration for the transition?

2B: Regulatory Innovation – The need for speed
We are in the second phase of the green transition, ready for the full green energy build-out and electrification of society. We are determined on clear decarbonization goals by 2030 and on living up to the 1,5 degree climate target. But we struggle in reaching these goals as we are continuously held back by systematic, regulatory barriers. The EU has recently recognized this challenge, introducing a temporary framework to reduce the permitting time for wind and other renewables. But is it enough? What kind of regulatory innovation is required for us to speed up implementation of green energy production? And with the regulatory innovation and technology innovation needed in the continued green transition, how do we couple the two to deliver renewables both smarter and faster?
