This initiative paves the way for creating an international research, study, and innovation hub in Bornholm, focusing on energy islands and future energy systems.
For the past 20 years, DTU has partnered with Bornholms Energy & Supply and the Regional Municipality of Bornholm to develop Bornholm as an international testbed for future energy systems attracting industry and universities from around the world. This collaboration is now being tremendously strengthened.
Søren Møller Christensen, CEO of Baltic Energy Island, is thrilled about the new possibilities: “With Realdania By & Byg’s admirable ambition to renovate the building, DTU’s strong commitment, and the regional municipalitys visionary approach to Energy Island Bornholm, a unique foundation has been created for an international environment for research and innovation. Our arms are open to even more universities and companies, and we will work diligently to attract them in the coming years until we occupy the fantastic facilities that Realdania By & Byg is now creating.”
Realdania By& Byg has already taken over Rønne Historic Power Plant Gl. Elværk and the renovation will take place until the end of 2027.
The ongoing DTU-activities with courses and research activities will continue during therenovation. The next group of students will arrive on Bornholm in January.
